I haven’t read it (it’s not fiction is it?) but when I worked in a library in a really disadvantaged area that book, and the others in the series were permanently in demand. I often wondered why as I could tell lots of the kids that came to use the library had bad home lives.
Hi Amber,
I read this book years ago as a companion to ‘They Cage the Animals at Night’. Both books are true. I have met the author of They Cage, Jennings Michael Birch, and his presentations to middle school kids are always poignant. The kids seem to really get a great deal from them, even without knowing if some identify with him on another level...I think people end up with the ‘it’s fiction’ reaction to these books due to the unfortunate tainting of memoir (remember what happened to A Thousand Little Pieces/Oprah) as a literary genre. I also believe that with these books in particular, it is so hard for some to believe that we/humans could do such things to each other, especially children.
Pelzer has written a few ‘sequels’ and has spoken to thousands about his journey from ‘that abused kid’ to a man dedicating his life to awareness and hopefully, prevention. Even if he saves one child, or helps them to heal from their abuse, to see that there is a life ahead, I believe it is worth the read… and yes, it awakens that Moma Bear.
Never heard of “It”, but if I ever see “It” around, I’ll give “It” a read.
Hey Amber! Nice to see open comments again!
Tell Len I said hi!
Hey there Amber… long time no talk… I’ve missed you and Len. He doesn’t seemt o update much anymore. I think everyone had gotten so busy and the blog whirlwind has slowed to a nice breeze.
This book sounds interesting and it is funny that I stopped by today just after I finished posting a book review. I get free books from Zondervan and other Christian publishers. It is their way of getting nearly free advertisement and my way of getting free books!
Speaking of books that make you hold your children tighter… I finally picked up “The Lovely Bones” after hearng numerous people tell me that it was a great book, “A little dark, but a great book”. It’s horrific and compelling. In the opening chapter their is a little girl that is murdered and it happened so easily, by a neighbor, that I just don’t know if I could be a parent and allow my children to leave my sight.
Well, sorry for the Novella… hope you and the family are doing well. Tell Len I said Hello.
Hey Amber!
Haven’t been here in awhile. I have read this book as well as countless other books on the topic, partly because when I was a therapist many of the kids who came to the clinic were kids just like Dave Pelzer. It’s hard to read I agree, and its harder to actually hear children tell you stories like this.
The other two books in the series are a bit easier to read.
Your
blog is very good!

I know the issue of child abuse is a horrible problem but I read that the book was fiction.
