So, I’m a leeeettle excited tonight! I wasn’t going to blog about this yet, not that it’s a secret or anything, but when I told myself to start blogging again I came up with a little mental list of things to blog about on the days I couldn’t find anything else to blog about and I still have to blog about the chickens, plum chutney, school, Daniel’s first lost tooth etc, etc… before I blog about this but *take a breath* This is HUGE!!
Well, it’s huge for me. A few years ago I started having friends tell me I should take up photography, you know, professionally. I couldn’t really see where they were coming from, although I enjoyed ‘shooting’ my kids (that is so fun to say!!) and I couldn’t even see it as a pipe dream. I thought, to be a professional photographer I would have to at least know what the heck an f-stop was and how to control my shutter speed, right? Well, it was never gonna happen, not with me pressing the buttons anyway!
Rosie went to school full time this year, and I decided to take a night class in photography. It is a very basic introduction to photography but somehow, the f-stop/shutterspeed thing fell into place for me. It helped that Len got me a very snazzy camera this summer too. A few weeks back, a friend of mine had a baby and she had heard through the grapevine that I was taking a photography class and asked if I would to take a few pictures of her baby. I wasn’t overly impressed with what I’d done, having learned enough at college to spot my mistakes, but it was fun practice for me. My friend on the other hand was very happy and she has been telling all of her friends about the pictures and sending them my flickr link… To cut a long story short, I have had 4 people ‘comission’ me for portraits (ME!!)… and my first proper (ie, paying) photoshoot is TOMORROW!!
A week or so ago I did studio work at college and learned how to use studio lights/lighting, light metering and some of the basics in portraiture etc… then, due to my state of exitedness about the whole thing and the possiblity of people wanting to PAY me, I went out and got my own little bag of studio tricks!! I have been practicing on my kids (and all my friend’s kids) for the last week or so.
This is my favourite portrait from this weekend…
I still have so many things I need to figure out (skill wise) and also business wise about how to go about the whole run.your.own.studio.thing, charging etc but, I have decided to go for it!!
